Cambodia Travel Information Part II

 In our previous newsletter we covered important travel information for your Trip to Cambodia. We shared information about when to go, costs and how you can communicate with the Khmer people.

As you get closer to the day of your departure and your Cambodia Tour, you probably have more questions…. What is the medical care like, how about visas, ATM’s, food and transportation.

Here is some more information for you:

MEDICAL CARE – It is very wise to have health insurance and inquire as to its applicability overseas. Medical care is improving constantly in Cambodia and in the case of a needed evacuation for more serious situations, Thailand is only a short hop away and the health care there is world-class.

It is rare for such a need to take place, however. Normal maladies come from adjustment to food and possible infection from mosquitoes. There is ample medical resources available for such ailments and minor injuries. The greatest aid to the traveler in most situations is to use common sense. As your host, Angkor and Asia Adventures is much more than a “tour service”. We want to ensure you have a wonderful experience and will be by your side and available 24/7 when questions come up in case common sense isn’t so common. In short, you’ll be just fine!

TRAVEL VISAS – Easy. When you arrive, you fill out a form, show your passport and pay $20 (US). Done.

ATM’s – Again, no problem. It should make sense that the people here WANT you to have access to your money, right?. There are many banks have ATM and you could withdraw the cash either in US dollars or Riels.

HOW ABOUT THE FOOD? – This is one of the really good parts! Local cuisine is sublime! Like your hotel, what you eat and its costs depend on you. If you wish a rib-eye steak with the trimmings, it is to be had and probably cheaper than back home. DO NOT MISS AN OPPORTUNITY TO DIVE INTO CAMBODIAN FOOD. Think of Thai, but less spicy. Of course, if you like spicy it can easily be arranged. Street food is as safe here as anywhere. If after many meals in restaurants you may wish for a “local” dining experience, and you are welcome to eat with us and really get the Khmer treatment. The Khmer cuisine is based mostly upon fish, pork, rice, and vegetables. Khmer duck is not to be missed. All Western foods are readily available. Tourism is rapidly growing in Cambodia with travelers from all over the world coming to visit, so the menus in the restaurants and cafes are sure to have dishes you recognize. Even a double bacon cheeseburger with French fries!

TRANSPORTATION – Angkor & Asia Adventures have complete transportation resources for anywhere you can possibly want to go, and then some. From booking an airplane hop from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, motoring around the temples in our own tuk-tuks (4-person open-air carriages pulled by motorbike) to air conditioned vans and even tour buses, we have it all to meet your needs. Tuk-tuk transportation is free to our guests, but if you wish to get out into the jungles (and possibly play with the elephants!), we have 4-wheel drive vehicles that can get us where we want to go. When it comes to transportation, not to worry. You are in the best of hands with us.

ONE OTHER THING – The “Golden Rule” goes a long way in Cambodia. When you are respectful of the people here and are familiar with some simple customs, you’ll be amazed at how it opens doors for you. A public display of anger is embarrassing to the Khmer. Leave impatience behind and the need for immediate gratification. Everything happens for a reason, and at a time when it is supposed to happen. Take it easy. Be happy. Enjoy life. Decompress. Sit down with us, have a beer, some Khmer duck and laugh!
