Phnom Kulen Tour

Highlights of a tour to Phnom Kulen, include a visit to the Wat at the summit of the mountain which houses a large reclining Buddha carved into a sandstone boulder, a swim near the waterfall or the smaller bathing areas and a beautiful lunch near the river.

The road to Phnom Kulen winds its way through spectacular scenery, emerging on the plateau after a 20km ascent. The views from the top of the 487 peak are tremendous, as you see right across the forested plateau.

There as many as 20 minor Angkorian temples around the plateau, the most important of which is Prasat Rong Chen, the first pyramid or temple-mountain to be constructed in the Angkor area. Most impressive are the large stone animals or guardians of the mountain, known as Sra Damrei. These are difficult to get to, with the route passing through mined sections of the mountain, so sticking to the path is important! (In the wet season you cannot use the path due to the slippery conditions). This rewarding excursion is one that not many visitors to Phnom Kulen manage, but the rough trail and hike are worth it once you see the beautiful view and guardians of the mountain.
